A home energy assessment or audit, is really helpful to understand how your property is performing in the winter and summer- and how you can improve your energy use.
Victorian Residential Efficiency Scorecard (VRES)
Does your house get too hot in summer and too cold in winter?
Are your bills too high?
Are you buying a home, selling a home or renovating?
The Victorian Residential Efficiency Scorecard Assessment (VRES) can help you.
What is the VRES?
The Victorian Residential Efficiency Scorecard is an Australian-first home energy rating program, developed by the Victorian Government. It will give your home a star rating that you can use to compare it to others.
Many Victorian homes have high energy bills simply due to the way the home is built. The Scorecard helps you understand and improve this performance, so you can make better decisions to make your home more comfortable in both summer and winter, and reduce your energy use.
How long does a VRES take?
Assessments take anywhere between 1.5 to 3 hours on site.
Initially, the home energy assessor will ask you some questions about what your priorities are for the assessment, and about your home and energy use.
They will then proceed to collect evidence and data to complete the assessment – this process can take up to 2 hours but you are free to carry on with other things in the home while they work.
The assessor will need access to the entire home and will need to take photographic evidence of fixed appliances and home construction. This goes into their report.
To finish, the assessor goes through the Scorecard Rating findings with you and their initial recommendations, answering any questions you might have along the way.
What do you get?
Within a week of the onsite assessment, you will receive the 2 page Scorecard Certificate, along with an individualised 6-10 page report outlining in detail their recommendations and actions you can take to make your home more energy-efficient and comfortable.
Recommendations include a host of ideas, from simple, low-cost opportunities and behavioural changes, to suggestions for the most energy-efficient appliances to heat & cool your home and generate hot water.
For assessments in Melbourne & surrounds, we recommend Going Green Solutions
Their assessor rates the energy efficiency of your home’s construction (including insulation, draughts, windows, shading, zoning), fixed appliances (heating, cooling & hot water), and other key features such as solar PV energy production.
Their assessor, Lucinda, holds a Cert IV in Home Sustainability Assessing and is independently accredited to use the government-supported Scorecard webtool.
Her suggestions are based purely on your home, and what she thinks is the most effective and efficient options are for you.

“I found Lucinda to be very practical, professional and really engaging. She is great in this role and I must congratulate your company on how the assessments are conducted and the very professional and systematic approach to date.”
– Cheryl, Bendigo
“The booking and assessment process was simple and prompt. We enjoyed having Lucinda visit and complete the assessment. She engaged well, was very thorough, answered a lot of questions, and explained things extremely well.
The report provided complete observations, advice, and general information. Despite being stunned by the positive outcome rating we will be undertaking the few recommended additional improvements. Thank you for the prompt provision of this service. ”
– Kerry C & Cushla C, Cranbourne West, VIC
“The booking process was easy to organise. Lucinda arrived when she said she would. She explained what she would do and listened to my questions and answered them appropriately.
She spent a couple of hours going around and taking notes, photos and measurements, and then sat down with me to go through her assessment. This was really helpful and gave a good overview of the big and little issues, with some really good suggestions to quickly fix some issues.
The followup Certificate and Report were extremely useful as they suggested an order of priority to tackle the problems. There were also a few suggestions as to companies that might be able to carry out the work if you didn’t know anyone.
Overall it was really good for us to realise how inefficient at saving electricity and gas our home was but also to get some easy and cheap ideas.
Lucinda was really helpful and very respectful of our home and has been happy to answer any follow-up questions we have had. I would thoroughly recommend Going Green Solutions to carry out an energy assessment as it was very useful for us”
